In 1 Cor. 11: 17 – 34 the Holy Spirit speaks through Apostle Paul to the Church at Corinth to give them instruction regarding their communion or breaking of bread together.
He tells them their coming together was for the worse, instead of for the better.
The manner in which they were coming together, (some were drunk and others were feasting while other were going hungry ), was belittling or despising the Spirit in which Jesus had at the last supper with the twelve disciples.
Vs 26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.”
Vs. 27 “Therefore whoever eats this bread is or drinks this cup of the Lord, in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
For many years I came to the Lord’s supper with a mind as if I was going through security at the airport scanner. I would carefully examine all my failures in the light of this verse, which left me feeling completely unworthy, and thinking I should probably not participate this time, lest I drink or eat judgement to myself. Vs 28 – 29.
However, this is not the problem the Holy Spirit was addressing to the Church at Corinth.
He was addressing the way or manner in which they were coming together, see Vs. 20 – 21.
We are all unworthy to partake in the Lord’s death. This is the very proclamation we make in eating the bread and drinking the cup. It’s the proclamation of the Lord Jesus’ New Covenant with us, in His blood.
Hebrews 12:22-24 tells us we have come to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
The Old Covenant was one as it is recorded to us in Deuteronomy 29-30, of “If you do, then I will.”
But now Jesus is making a new covenant with us. It’s a proclamation recorded in John 3:16 and 1 John 4:7-21. “We love Him, because He first loved us.” Vs 19
What a wonderful proclamation to make by eating the bread and drinking the cup, that Jesus’ blood is sufficient to make me righteous and blameless before God. Romans 5:9-21
Revelation 5 proclaims this truth. He, Jesus, the lamb who was slain, is the only one who is Worthy!
