The No Bandaid Gospel

The No Bandaid Gospel

Luke 5:36-39Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”
Introduction This is NOT a message against works or obedience. This is a message about resting in the work that has already been done.

  • John 15:5 – Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. (NKJV)
  • Ephesians 2:10 – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (ESV)

Context Surrounding “New Wine / Old Wine Skins” Parable

  • Jesus and the Paralytic (4 friends) – Luke 5:17-26 (Forgiveness is more important that healing.)
  • Jesus and the Tax Collector – Luke 5:27-32 (The sick need a physician – not the well.)
  • Jesus healing on the Sabbath – Luke 6:1-11 (Rules aren’t as important as life.)

Understanding the Parable

  • New Wine
    • Wedding at Cana
      • John 2:1-12 (read verses 7-10)Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.  When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” (ESV)
    • Winemaking…. “a result of breaking wholes into parts and integrating parts into wholes, grapes into wine.”
    • New wine typically tastes WORSE rather than BETTER.
  • New/Old Wine Skins
    • Mark 2:21-22 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.
  • The “Patched Shirt” Life
    • No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old”
  • Overwhelmed or Overflowing?
    • John 4:14 …but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.
    • John 7:38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.
    • Isaiah 43:1,11,13,16,18-19 But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you…. I, even I, am the Lord, And besides Me there is no savior…. Indeed before the day was, I am He; And there is no one who can deliver out of My hand; I work, and who will reverse it?”…. Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea And a path through the mighty waters, Who brings forth the chariot and horse, “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thingNow it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.
    • Amos 5:24 But let justice run down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

Closing

  • Defender – “You go before I know that You’ve even gone to win my war. You come back with the head of my enemy. You come back and You call it my victory.”

      • 2 Samuel 9
    • Isaiah 61:3 To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
